This premium Crianza from Ontañón is absolutely delicious! With pronounced berry fruit aromas, lightly spicy, oaky notes and a hint of liquorice. The palate has strawberry, raspberry, red cherry characters, silky and elegant with fine tannins and good length. 14% vol.
I think the wines from this Bodega are just getting better and better! We’re thrilled to now include this Crianza, to sit alongside their Reserva wine that we’ve listed for some time now.
Produced from 40 year old vines grown on the slopes of the Sierra Yergas, around Quel, just south of the River Ebro in Rioja Baja. Predominantly Tempranillo grown in the La Montesa vineyard, blended with Garnacha from Siete Caminos. Following a long maceration period, the wine spends 12 months in 60% American and 40% French oak barrels (both used and new). This is followed by a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. 14% vol.
El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown from modest beginnings into one of the best known Rioja producers.
This is unashamedly a delightful fruit forward easy drinking unoaked Rioja. The Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc grapes were sourced from El Coto’s high-altitude Finca Carbonera vineyard. At over 840 metres above sea level, the grapes grown here benefit from warm days tempered by cool nights, allowing for an ideally paced slow ripening and resulting in grapes with the perfect balance between concentrated flavours and vibrant acidity. The Viura grapes were mainly sourced from prime vineyard sites in Rioja Alta with limestone and clay soils. 12% vol.

Viña Lanciano lies on a meander of the Ebro river where Rioja Alta meets Rioja Alavesa, which I’ve had the privilege of walking through. The 72 hectares of south-facing vineyard are sustainably farmed and the vines are mostly goblet trained with an average age of 35 years.
This wine is bright crimson in colour with purple hues. Elegant aromas of ripe red and black fruits, liquorice and sweet spice are combined with the signature minerality of wines from the Viña Lanciano estate, a smokiness from the oak and earthy, leathery aromas from the bottle age. The palate is silky and elegant, showcasing ripe fruits and finely integrated tannins. This is a remarkable Rioja with wonderful elegance and finesse. 13.5% vol.
Upbeat aromas of sweet peach, citrus and tropical fruits carry through to the palate, which is accompanied by creamy notes and spices from time in oak. This is an energetic white Rioja, a blend of Viura and Tempranillo with generous weight that is perfectly balanced by bright acidity.
Aged for 4 months in French and American oak barrels. 12.5% vol.
I had the pleasure of walking and then having lunch in this vineyard on my visit to this winery some years ago now and have always loved their wines, despite not always listing them here in our shop. However, we came across this at a recent tasting… and it is on fire!
Wonderful aromatics of warmth spicy earthy darks fruits interwoven with the right amount of oak. It is Autumn in a glass and needs a lovely shoulder or leg of Welsh lamb to pair it with.
The Tempranillo and Graciano grapes are sourced from La Pasada Vineyard, at 700-800m altitude. The wine spends 36 months in a mixture of American and French oak, and 24 months in bottle prior to release. 13.5% vol.

This wine is straw yellow in colour with youthful tones. With succulent citrus and yellow stone fruit on both the nose and the palate, this well-balanced wine has good structure and acidity.
A small portion was fermented in fine-grained, new French oak casks for one month, with the remainder in stainless-steel tanks. The wine was then aged in the same vessels with bâtonnage.
I had the pleasure of visiting this estate some years ago – it was a revelation to see the drive and skill of this dynamic family run Bodega to ensure the quality at every level.
Aromas of bramble fruit with spice and lightly floral notes. On the palate plum and blackberry fruit flavours combine with ample acidity, minerality and earthy notes. It has a fine structure and supple tannins, giving elegance and length. 13.5 % vol.
A superb wine of real finesse. Aged 6 years in the barrel. Light, fresh texture, with aromas of dried berries and vanilla. Rich & very dry on the palate. Fragrant and complex. 13% vol.
