Spain off your Rioja?

Well it’s been a really exciting month for me with two wine trips to Spain is as many weeks. Visiting wine regions of Rueda, Ribera del Duero, vinos de Madrid, and of course Rioja.

The wines we tasted are really showing that Spain has come of age and that the country is not reliant on quality wines coming from the Rioja DO.

Exciting deep dark and intense wines from Dominio de Atauta (wines arrives w/c 20th July), small/miniscule production from Boedgas Commando G in Madrid (we did wear our underwear!) focusing on old vine Grenache in the hills in the middle of nowhere, in a vineyard that was more akin to a sandpit than soil! We have bought 18 bottles of the 84 available in the UK.

The wines (they only make two) from Valenciso in Rioja are always a delight and the 2008 is drinking beautifully (£22.95 – old label on show) no surprise the wine is listed by all four of Spain’s 3 Michelin Star restaurants.

The real surprise this week (13th-15th July) has been the D-12 from Bodegas LAN and their A- Mano special reserve wine, which we often have overlooked as being inferior to the rest of their portfolio – no longer.

So do look out for our new wines from Spain arriving over the next few weeks.

Salut!
