Having the privilege of tasting this wine back in February this year, I felt this and the Château Phélan Segur were the stand out wines for value for money. I have perhaps a soft spot for this Château, having visited it some 10 years ago and was blown away by their cool Bond-like underground tasting cellar. Also pretty cool as our King and Queen visited them this year as well (2026).
All the grapes are sourced from their single plot 87 hectares (not all under vine), whilst this wine comes from the younger vines they still have an average age of roughly 35 years old, so not tee angers by any stretch.
This wine as an immediate inviting nose of dark brambly fruits, made with a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot grapes. Post fermentation the wines spends 14 months in oak barrels of which 20% are new oak and made by their own on-site cooperage (whom I also had the pleasure of meeting). I don’t know of many estates who have this facility!
The Cathiard family have always respected nature and their environment. They ork sustainably and if I’m not mistaken one of the first principal estates in Bordeaux to be certified organic.
The Cassis notes are confirmed on the palate and now interwoven with star anise, tobacco leaf notes and soft approachable tannins on the finish. Drinking very well now. 13.5% vol.
