May News

I hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend and holiday for those of you who went away. The year as ever moves on at a frighteningly steady pace. My favourite month of May is now upon us, however, this year might be a little fraught in our household and for many of you also with those who have family members with exams over the next few weeks. Fingers and toes crossed it all goes well for both children and parents!

The last time I wrote I was getting excited about the arrival of our new Greek wines which have now arrived and been well received by those of you brave enough to venture a little out of your normal comfort zone. If you have not already done so, please do come and see what we have to offer.

Last night we had our first wine tasting at MOR Kitchen with Rob from Raymond Reynolds, the UK’s leading Portuguese specialist importer and the wines went down really well.

Some highlights from the Portuguese wine tasting has to be the Susanna Estaban Inho Branco from the Alentejo, the modern (yet traditional in style) Douro red from Pormenor was also well received. My personal favourites though was the white wine from Murgas in the Bucelas region (£26.50), just north of Lisbon by some 45 minutes and Quinta do Roques Colheita Tinto (£21.95) from the Dao Estate.

The Iberian Peninsula really has some excellent wines to offer and whilst these Portuguese wines are premium they always over delivery on quality and have a lovely bit of bottle age to boot, so perfect for drinking.

This month has also seen the return of some of our Chilean and Argentinian wines. The Abras Malbec (£22.00) from the far north of Argentina, the Salta region from Karim Mussi is a delight, wonderful ink black, beautifully fragrant and intense but balance refreshing acidity.

New Chilean wines from producer Vina Dagaz El Camino a blend of Cabernet and Carmenere (£14.95) and their 100% Estate Carmenere (£25) also offer great value and typicity of their region and grape variety.

Our Domaine Montrose Rose 2025 has also landed 16th April and will be available in the shop from the following week and we have the new 2025 of Picpoul de Pinet from Domaine des Lauriers. Both just shout ‘Spring,Summer… drink me now!’

Lastly but by no means least it would be remis of me not to mention our English sparkling wines which has been bolstered by the arrival of Black Chalk wines and Wiston, to sit alongside our local Cotswolds Woodchester Valley estate, Hambledon from Hampshire, Nyetimber from West Sussex, Henners from East Sussex and Rathfinny, over 12 wines of varying styles to choose from that would impress any French Champagenoise.

That’s it for now and we do hope the coming weeks and months are not too stressful… of course rest assured we always have some cracking wines to comfort you!

Bookings for the summer wine tasting at Hillers Rose Garden on Friday 19th June are now being made so hope to see you a one of our forthcoming tasting.

Santé!
