John Duval, Plexus Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier 2023

£23.95

We had the privilege of meeting Tim Duval, son and now winemaker in charge of his father’s winery John Duval (who was the winemaker for Penfolds, making their ultra premium wine Grange for some 20 years) before setting up his own label in 2003, with Tim joining him in 2016.

The fruit is sourced from selected growers in Eden Valley and north of the Barossa valley.  2023 marked a cool vintage and harvest was down in early March, very different to the heat of 2025 which was picked almost 6 weeks earlier than normal. Here we have wonderful aromatics, bright white fruits and floral notes – white peaches, refreshing acidity and 12% vol. Judicious use of the oak.

Fermentation commenced in stainless steel with some of the Marsanne and Viognier completing fermentation and maturation in oak. The remaining Marsanne and the Roussanne was aged on lees in tank until bottling, to enhance the structure and texture of the wine. 20% of the total blend was aged in fine-grain French oak for a total of 7 months, until bottling in early October. Class in a glass!
